John Fawell, MBE qualified in applied biology with a speciality in animal physiology and has worked in mammalian and environmental toxicology and risk assessment for over 30 years, and is a non-executive director at wca environment. He worked in contract toxicology followed by a period in the food industry working on food contaminants and the safety assessment of novel foods before joining the Water Research Centre where he worked for 20 years as head of toxicology and subsequently chief scientist of the National Centre for Environmental Toxicology. He was Director of Environment at Warren Associates and is now an independent consultant.
He has worked in toxicological research on the risks of a wide range of environmental chemicals and acts as an advisor to both industry and governments. He is coordinator for industrial and naturally occurring chemicals for the WHO Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality. He has prepared numerous background documents for WHO and has served on WHO and IPCS expert groups covering a wide range of different chemicals. He has served on a number of government advisory committees, including the Sub-Committee on Pesticides.
Mr Fawell has an international reputation and is involved in a number of international forums in addition to WHO, and has close contacts with regulators, industry and researchers in many parts of the world including North America and Japan. He was also chairman of the Expert Committee on Health Aspects of Water Supply for KIWA in the Netherlands. Mr Fawell is an author of over 70 publications and is author of many project reports for a wide range of clients.
