Mick Whelan

Mick Whelan, PhD is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Science at Cranfield University, specialising in mathematical modelling of environmental systems. For the last ten years most of Mick’s research has focussed on the environmental risk assessment of chemicals with particular interest in understanding pesticide transfers from land to water and the fate of organic chemicals emitted to surface waters via the “down-the-drain” pathway. He is also interested in nutrient cycling in soil and water and in nitrogen and phosphorus transfers from agricultural land to ground and surface waters. His academic experience is complemented by five years in industry – working in environmental modelling and risk assessment of chemicals for Unilever. He has recently worked on a number of Environment Agency and industry-funded projects on the environmental fate and effects of chemicals and was a team-member on a recent SNIFFER project (WFD 85) to improve understanding of phosphorus fate and transport within groundwater and its significance for associated receptors. Mick is a member of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry and has published more than 35 papers in peer reviewed international journals.
