Peter Simpson, MSc is a Principal Consultant at wca environment and an environmental toxicologist with over 10 years of experience in applied ecotoxicological research, project management and environmental consultancy. Peter’s specific areas of expertise are the design, quality assurance and interpretation of ecotoxicity tests and bioassays, endocrine disruption in the aquatic environment, the risk assessment of complex mixtures, the development of environmental quality standards and environment foresight/horizon scanning.
Between 1999 – 2006 Peter worked for the Environment Agency of England and Wales’ Science Department where he was responsible for conducting and managing research projects, including several investigating the cause and consequences of endocrine disruption in freshwater fish. He was also involved in projects developing catchment models of steroid oestrogen exposure across the UK and projects investigating the population-level consequences of endocrine disruption.
From 2006 – 2008 Peter worked in the Environment Agency’s Horizon Scanning team providing strategic advice to both the Environment Agency and Defra on the threats and opportunities of emerging science and technology, including novel pollutants. Since joining wca environment Peter has worked on the development of environmental quality standards for metals, the use of field data to derive environmental quality standards and a “Weight of Evidence” assessment of the endocrine activity of several pesticide active substances.
