Peter Matthiessen

Peter Matthiessen, PhD is an aquatic ecotoxicologist with 40 years of experience in the fields of chemical risk assessment, environmental monitoring and research into the effects of aquatic pollution, is an independent consultant and an Associate of wca environment. He has been a senior researcher with Cefas and CEH, and is experienced in managing large groups of research scientists. He has a long track record in scientific areas connected with the regulation of chemicals (particularly biocides and pesticides) and is currently a member of the UK Advisory Committee on Pesticides. His major research field since the mid-1980s has concerned the effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on aquatic organisms (fish and molluscs), and he is recognised as a world expert on this subject. He is particularly interested in translating research findings on EDCs into more effective chemical hazard and risk assessments, and to that end is co-chair of the OECD Validation Management Group for Ecotoxicity Tests (VMG-eco) which is developing improved in vivo screens and tests for these substances. He has published 129 peer-reviewed papers and major reports and co-edited several books.
