About REACH

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of CHemicals), the European Union regulation for both new and existing chemical substances, came into force on 1st June 2007. It is a new regime designed to achieve the following:

  • Registration of basic information on chemical substances submitted by companies to a central database.
  • Evaluation of the registered information to determine hazards and risks.
  • Authorisation requirements imposed on the use of high-concern substances.
  • Restriction of a substance’s use if it poses an unacceptable risk to health or the environment.

All chemicals produced or imported into the EU in quantities above 1 tonne per year per manufacturer/importer need to be Registered with the European Chemicals Agency. Considerable technical information is required for each Registration, depending on the tonnage band into which the substance falls.

We have extensive expertise in risk assessment under earlier legislation for new and existing substances and, since REACH entered into force, we have provided substantial technical advice to consortia from the organic chemicals and metals industries. Our advice to these companies includes:

  • Technical information searches
  • Data review and assessment, including robust summary preparation
  • Data gap analysis and design of Integrated Testing Strategies
  • PBT/vPvB assessment
  • GHS classification and labelling
  • IUCLID 5 dossier preparation
  • Environmental exposure modelling
  • Chemical Safety Report production
  • Study commissioning and monitoring
